Shorewood High School, in collaboration with its student club Youth Rising Up (YRU), is proud to announce its Annual Black History Celebration on Thursday, February, 27, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. in the SHS Gensler Auditorium. This year's theme, Black on Broadway, will highlight the profound contributions of Black artists to the world of Broadway, one of the most iconic stages in history.
What makes this year’s celebration truly special is that the performance is entirely student-led. In a departure from last year, where outside performers were invited to participate, the students have written the script and will lead the show themselves. “We’ve had outside performers come in to help with our Black History Month performance,” said Kaymin Phillips, YRU president. “This year, we wanted to put students at the forefront and share this story through their voices.”
The student leaders of YRU will serve as the show’s emcees, guiding the audience through a theatrical journey that spans the rich history of Broadway. The performance will feature a variety of scenes, including Shakespeare’s Othello and the music of the Temptations, all showcasing the immense impact of Black artists on the storied stage.
The show is open to Shorewood and surrounding communities and seats are on a first come first serve basis. Student and Senior tickets will be $5 with all others being $10. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the door. In addition, t-shirts will be on sale for $15, with all proceeds going to Youth Rising Up (YRU) and its ongoing mission to empower student development through diversity, academics and social services. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to support our students and celebrate Black history through the arts.

The fourth graders at Atwater Elementary school have been working on a Get Out and Vote project, along with Art teacher, Angela Hayes.
Ms. Hayes taught the students how to create a Vote logo in art class. After each student completed their creation, the class held a primary election and students were able to vote for the top t-shirt design from each crew. Then, they voted on the top design from the three remaining and Bennett Dobberpuhl’s project was put on a t-shirt, paid for by the Atwater PTO.
Students learned about Civics, what it means to be a responsible citizen, levels of government and voting. They decorated Voting bookmarks and brought them to the Shorewood Public Library and Stone Creek. Students also participated in data chats about electoral voting. They colored Vote signs and hung them at home and at businesses around the community. Representative Darrin Madison visited Atwater and talked to the fourth graders and answered questions.
The fourth-grade class proudly wore the winning t-shirt design during their field trip to Madison on Friday, November 1st, which included a tour of the Capitol.
